The Crystherium Utilia was the Scarran name for the flower Strelitzia, or birds of paradise flowers, was a type of plant found on planets across the Milky Way, including Earth. It was considered a delicacy by the Scarran Empire, which only the Ruling Caste were permitted to eat. The plants exponentially increased the intelligence of Scarrans who devoured them, allowing the Scarrans to be as intelligent as other advanced species -- such as Sebaceans.
The flowers can only be grown in very specific conditions, which few worlds in the Scarran Empire can accomodate. The places where crops of these flowers can be grown are centers of operation for the Scarran Hierarchy.
Katratzi contained an area that had been artificially created to grow crops of Crystherium Utilia -- one reason the station was so valuable to the empire. John Crichton also piqued the Scarran interest in Earth, by accidentally revealing that the flowers grew in abundance on the planet. When Katratzi was destroyed, the Scarrans attempted to reach Earth to replace their lost crop -- it was only through the efforts of Aeryn Sun and Moya's Pilot that the wormhole to Earth was destroyed and a Scarran invasion was prevented.
