Bayban the Butcher, also known as Bayban the Berserker (or just "Bayb" by his mother), was a notorious criminal who was near the top of the Terran Federation's Most Wanted List, second only to Roj Blake. His reputation for mayhem and destruction, however, surpassed anyone else in the Milky Way. Bayban prided himself on his infamy -- and took Blake's rapid rise to the top of the Most Wanted list as a personal offense.

At some point over the course of his career as a space pirate, Bayban met Del Tarrant. The details of the meeting are a mystery, though it is clear that neither had a favorable opinion of the other. Some time later, rumors began to circulate of Bayban's death.

By chance, Bayban and his followers -- including Kerrill and Sherm -- arrived on the planet Keezarn. Here, they encountered the locked hatch that was said to contain "this world and the next". Certain that there was valuable treasure within, Bayban was determined not to leave Keezarn without finding what was within. However, Bayban was unable to open the door.

Knowing of Vila Restal's reputation, the pirate schemed to lure the thief in to open the hatch. He sent word to the Liberator that valuable crystals needed for starship maintenance would be traded for Vila's services. Tarrant made the deal, and the Vila was sent down to Keezarn. Bayban gave Vila one hour to open the hatch.

When Bayban returned to the hatch, however, Vila had opened it and disappeared inside. Bayban prepared to blast through the door, but was interrupted when the rest of the crew of the Liberator attempted to rescue Vila -- which coincided with a rebellion by the Keezarns. Although Bayban was able to survive the confrontation, after the Keezarns had escaped through the hatch he attempted to blast it open with a cannon. The blast destroyed the city and killed Bayban.

Bayban the Butcher is derived from Blake's 7.

Author's Note[]

Although Bayban the Butcher only appeared in one episode of the canonical Blake's 7, we should attempt to expand his role significantly.
