Moya's initial Pilot was a female of the species, who bonded with the Leviathan biomechanoid with the blessing of the Pilot Elders, before the ship was first captured by the Peacekeepers. They were bonded for 21 cycles, during which time Moya would fall under Peacekeeper control.
Bialar Crais had plans to experiment on Moya, and knew this could not be done without the approval of the Leviathan's Pilot. He assigned Lieutenant Velorek to persuade the Pilot, but she would not acquiesce. Meanwhile, Crais sought out a replacement. When one was found, Crais interrupted Velorek's efforts and shot Moya's Pilot. It would be another two cycles before Moya could break free.
