USS Stargazer, Picard Maneuver 2

The USS Stargazer jumps to warp

Warp drives were a technology that permitted faster-than-travel at speeds exceeding those of other faster-than-light methods, such as mass effect drives or hetch drives. The speeds of a warp drive engine were measured in "warp factors".

Warp drives functioned by creating a bubble of subspace around the spaceship, which distorted the spacetime continuum so that the vessel could travel much faster than the speed of light. For a long time, warp drive was the most common form of interstellar travel. Unlike previous forms of faster-than-light travel, such as the mass effect drive, it permitted exploration beyond places that had been easily accessibly by the mass relays. By the time humanity had developed a warp drive, the relays had stopped functioning for many years.

It was discovered by Serova in 3370 CE that warp drives actually caused damage to the fabric of spacetime. It was determined that this was because the subspace bubble surrounding the spaceship was actually pulled out of the Warp itself. The United Federation of Planets temporarily imposed a warp 5 speed limit while they attempted to find a solution to the problem.

It should be noted that by the Age of Imperium, transwarp drives were often called "warp drives" however these allowed much faster speeds to be reached, by placing the stellar vessel directly into the subspace realm of the Warp.
